Medicines like Arkamin and Methyldopa were commonly used in old times. Due to availability of safer and more effective medicines in the last twenty years, these medicines are almost not in use nowadays. But they are used when BP is not well controlled by newer medicines or there are some contraindications to use these newer medicines.
It exhibits side effects like giddiness, dryness in the mouth, rebound hypertension if the dose is missed, etc.
If a pregnant woman is having high blood pressure, methyldopa is the medicine used as first choice.
