Introduction : Formation of blood clot to arrest bleeding is a natural and essential process given to mankind. Like platelets, there are many other clotting factors in the blood which help in blood coagulation.
Effects : Heparin is available in injection form. It prevents activation of these blood clotting factors and keep blood thin.
Uses :
- Unstable angina
- Heart attack
- During angioplasty
- During coronary artery bypass surgery
Dose :
Inj. Heparin : 500 – 1000 unit / hour as intravenous infusion
Inj. Low Molecular Weight Heparin (LMWH) : 0.3 – 0.6 ml Subcutaneous (under the skin) : Twice a day
Inj. Bivalirudin : Intravenous infusion
Side effects :
- Bleeding
- Disturbance in the functioning of platelets
Many researches of last several years proved that LMWH injections are more effective, safe and comfortable for the patient as compared to Heparin.
