  1. Consciousness : A patient is made to regain consciousness after 2 – 24 hours of surgery depending on his condition. During this period, the patient is given support of ventilator and oxygen.
  2. Tubes : A patient will find himself in ICU after regaining consciousness. He will find a nurse working in front of him. Various tubes will be found inserted in different parts of his body. They are :
  • Endotracheal Tube : This tube which passes through the mouth and goes up to the throat, is connected with the ventilator. This tube causes some pain in the throat and patient cannot speak while having this tube. It is removed after 2-24 hours.
  • Urine Catheter : Urine passes through a catheter inserted into the bladder and get collected in a bag. It is removed 2 – 3 days.
  • Arterial Line : A plastic cannula is inserted in the radial artery of the left or right hand at the wrist in order to measure blood pressure constantly. It is removed in 1 – 3 days.
  • Central Venous Line : This plastic cannula is inserted in the left or right vein of the neck. All medicines are given through it and blood sample required for different investigations is taken from it. This will help avoiding repeated needle prick. It is removed after 2 – 4 days.
  • Intra Aortic Balloon : This tube is passed through the groin of those patients whose heart is very weak and blood pressure drops. It is removed after 2 – 7 days.
  • Chest Drainage Tubes : The blood and liquid oozing from different parts around the heart needs to be drained out. For this 1 or 2 plastic tubes are inserted through the upper part of chest and abdomen and they are attached to a bag kept outside. They are removed after 3 – 5 days.
  • Oxygen Mask : A patient needs it for 2 – 5 days after surgery.
  1. Instruments / Machines : A patient will find himself surrounded by few machines. They are :
  • Monitor : Patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, level of oxygen in the blood, etc. are continuously shown on this small TV screen like machine. This machine makes bip-bip alarm when something is wrong.
  • Ventilator
  • Suction machine
  • Intra Aortic Balloon Pump
